Background

The five leading tech companies collectively calledFAMGA (Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, andAmazon) have a combined market cap of USD 497billion (as of February 3, 2017 ). They provide addedvalues to customers by utilizing information technology(IT). The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction(AEC) industry is known as the field that barely or slowlyaccepts new ideas and technologies. However, recently,movements have been conducted to find ways toutilize IT (or building information modeling (BIM)) betterand to show many cases that present the benefits ofadopting IT. Syntegrate is a consultancy specializing inthe application of computer-based technology. It utilizesand leverages technologies to improve project efficienciesand to increase project values. In this article, the fourcases worked on by Syntegrate are introduced to showthe added value brought about by the application of IT(or BIM) in the AEC industry. (1) Danjiang Bridge in Taiwanexhibits how to improve the collaboration process usingcloud technologies. (2) Through the application of BIMin the Admiralty Station in Hong Kong, the accuracy ofunderpinning was highly improved. (3) Working hoursfor drawing generation were dramatically reduced byautomation in a Taiwan resort project. (4) The projectionsimulation for the exhibition planning in a Japan exhibitioncenter project shows how BIM data can be utilized forplanning the operational stage.
